Ask the Swan Specialist

In Response To: Re: Signet on its own, missing tail feathers and a little lethargic (The Regal Swan)

Hi Hayley:

The young cygnet might have been dispatched from its parents because of the upcoming breeding season, or it might have been chased by a predator or lost on the migratory path.

The feathers missing from the tail leads us to believe that the young bird may have been grabbed by an older swan or a predator and may be in distress. In any case, it probably needs some attention. We would strongly suggest that you contact the RSPCA or Wendy Hermon at Swan Lifeline in Eton. They will come out and see if the young bird needs assistance. If so, the RSPCA or Swan Lifeline rescuers will capture, rehabilitate the cygnet and then return it back to the area that it was rescued. Thank you for caring! The Regal Swan
