Hi Davie

Swans usually stay together but this is totally dependent upon the species of swan as well as the individual swan. If the original pair was younger than the intruder or extremely older than the intruder, or there was something wrong with the original male, then any of these factors could be the reason behind this changing of the guard. The female would not try to intervene in a fight between two male swans as she could be severely injured. The RSPCA will turn the swan over to a swan rehabilitation facility such as Swan Lifeline. The swan will be examined, observed for a couple of days or weeks to make sure it can be returned to the wild. If so, the rehabbers will try to return the swan back to the area from which it was captured. The Regal Swan
