Hi Tony

Once you show the swan a net and try to capture it, the smarter the bird becomes and will try to avoid capture at all cost including flying. Will it come up to you to feed it? If so you have one shot to capture. Throw small pieces of bread in the water, slowly bringing it closer to you. Once it is within grasp, give it one more piece of bread and quickly grab its neck and control its wings so that you or the bird do not get hurt from flailing wings.

If this does not seem feasible, you need to get a couple of kayakers slowly kayacking behind the bird, moving it toward an enclosure or area such as between two buildings or hedge. Once the bird is onland, you will need some quick runners to grab the swan before it can get back into the water.

The major concern is not to run the bird into rocky or steep areas so that it could get injured further.

Once you have captured the swan, get it to a veterinarian , hopefully familiar with waterfowl. Just because you can remove the hook does not mean that it has not swallowed some line or has additional injuries.

Furthermore, if you twist the hook the wrong way you can damage the very sensitive bill to include possible misalignment which could severelyhamper its ability to feed. If you cannot affext a capture by yoursel we would suggest a wildlife/waterfowl rescue group with a no kill shelter. We are not sure of your location, but some states will advocate killing the swan, so be careful with whom you ask for assistance. The Regal Swan
