In Response To: Swan survival on frozen pond (John Polkowski)

Hi,
I live in Connecticut next to a small lake that freezes over in the winter months. For the first time since we moved here in 1985, we had a couple of swans that nested and gave birth to 4 cygnets. It was great watching the babies grow up and see the parents teach them to fly. Unfortunately, one cannot fly. The parents and the three that could fly took off last week leaving the other to fend for itself. Its just a matter of time before most of the pond freezes over. Typically, only a couple of very small areas along the shore remain liquid. Is it possible for the swan to winter over in these conditions.
