Hi Gene:

You can feed him a mixture of cracked corn and poultry layer pellets which will be cheaper for you in the long run and you can dump it in the area that you are placing the bowl. However, this can attract other waterfowl which may also cause predators to appear, the last thing that you want to have happen. Predators can go out on the ice and get the swan. Another idea, would be to increase the food bowl size, think large salad bowl and see if you can feed him morning, midday and afternoon. Make sure that the food is submerged in water in the bowl. If ice is prevalent, he is not going to get enough nutrition to feed himself. You might also provide him lettuce during these feedings to help him with vegetation.

Finally, he is getting tired, because he is fighting the ice and no food and his feet and legs are probably so cold they can't move. More feedings may help him hang around the fountain area with less ice. Hay in the leantoo might entice him but just ensure that no other animal can get into the structure. If he could stay in the leantoo with stray or hay, he will stay a lot warmer. If he starts getting closer to you, you might even be able to capture him and bring him indoors (shed or garage with no chemicals or hazards) to warm him for a couple of days. Let him just sit around and do nothing but get warm and eat if possible. Again, make sure that the food is submerged in water so the swan does not choke. He has to have water to eat the food. We think that if he is hungry enough, he'll come up to you and get closer for a possible capture. He may not like being indoors, but getting a couple days of warmth will help him. You will also need to protect the food from ants and other pests indoors, so the cleaner the area remains, the less pests. You might place a garbage bag under a bowl of food and a bowl of water so that he has access to both in the same area and you can readily clean the area by just replacing the bag when the old food spills over onto the ground.

The shaking of the head can mean several things, mites of the ear, parasites, or just cold and trying to shake the water and cold. Let us know how this progresses. The Regal Swan
