Hi Susan:

This is normal behavior. The male has done his job and now he will only be around to add some protection to the female and the cygnets. The female is responsible for the care of the young. Unlike folklore about swans usually remaining with one mate, this issue is up to the individual swan and swan species. The male may have another family on the side and taking care of business at the other nest. So, as long as he reappears to check on the female and cygnets at your pond, life is good!!

Once the cygnets are ready to fly, approximately 6 + months, the parents will take them to their migratory winter stations. The Regal Swan
