There are no guarantees that your male will accept a new mate. Most male swans will live the rest of their lives alone and will be just fine after losing a mate.

Should you introduce a new female, you will need to build a pen (1/2 in water and 1/2 on land with a feeder inside the pen). The pen must be enclosed top and bottom to prevent a predator from entering into the pen and killing the female. The pen will also allow the two swans to get used to each other and will allow the new bird time to acclimate to you, the new habitat and your system of feeding. She should stay in the pen for approximately 2 weeks.

Should any aggressive behavior be observed by the male at this time, it is a good indicator that he is not receptive to the new visitor and she should be found a new home. A boat should be on standby when you release the bird onto the lake with your swan to affect a rescue if needed. Even though he may not exhibit aggression while she is in the pen, he may react aggressively when she is placed onto the lake (his home)! Again, this would indicate that she needs to be found a new home so that neither swan is injured or killed.
