Swan behavior: Two families of swans fighting over territory in a lake

Will a swan family go to where a mating pair of swans has their nest and break it's unhatched eggs? The two males of each group have been fighting over territory in our lake. Last Thursday the male with the family came down to the south end of our lake and fought for about a half hour with the male of the mating swans and the female also came off her nest and was fighting. It was very disturbing to see. The male with the family almost had the male of the mating swans total underwater. Finally the male with the family gave up and left. It took the mating swan male about two days recover.
