In Response To: Swan behavior: Swans lay close to the road/on the road (Sharon)

There are two swans that come back every year to a nearby large pond. The pond has land on three sides and the fourth side borders a well traveled road with a speed limit of 50 mph. When they are not in the water they, for whatever reason, stand or lay so close to the road that they sometimes are on the white line (it is a two lane road). Someone puts orange cones to try to make people aware of the swans but the inevitable finally happened and one swan was killed! Can you explain their behavior? I can't imagine why they would lay so close to the road with cars whizzing by at 50 & 60 mph.
