The male could have died from old age, but not likely as in a good habitat, the swans can live up to 30 years. Unless you had a necropsy with blood and other body fluid cultures conducted, there is really no way to determine if the bird had an infection, parasite or other detrimental condition. So, the last thing you would want to do is introduce another swan until you can find out if there was something in the environment, poisonous insecticide, pesticide, disease, etc., that contributed to the male swan's death.
