In Response To: Re: should we replace dead mate? (The Regal Swan)

Hi Becky:

We would wait a little while. There are no guarantees that she will take another mate. Since you do not know what killed him, she could meet the same fate. You will also need to build a pen to acclimate the new bird and there is no guarantees that he will accept her. The male could have died from old age, but not likely as in a good habitat, the swans can live up to 30 years. Unless you had a necropsy with blood and other body fluid cultures conducted, there is really no way to determine if the bird had an infection, parasite or other detrimental condition. So, the last thing you would want to do is introduce another swan until you can find out if there was something in the environment, poisonous insecticide, pesticide, disease, etc., that contributed to the male swan's death.
