Thanks for your quick response. Unfortunately, the lake is now frozen over. When I first saw him today he was trapped in the thin ice. Somehow he got above the ice . He is now on top of the lake. Able to walk about on the ice, not well, but at least his feet are above the ice. One rehab person I spoke with believes that perhaps his wings have been surgically trimmed and that is why he does not fly. The rehabber I spoke with also believes that this swan simply walked to our lake . I have a family that lives not far from here and are aware of the swan being on this lake and have simply abandoned this animal. The fire dept came out and the swan did move on top of the lake. They said that is all they could do to help.He does not fly. The DNR will not help, said" mute swans are not native to the area and that mute swans are pests." I unfortunately do not feel comfortable getting the animal by myself. He is large. He was also hand fed. He was friendly in the warm months. So,. You said feed the swan. What should I try and feed him. During the warm months he always mixed his food with water. I am also thinking of getting a large cardboard box to leer him into. Perhaps a dishwasher or larger oven box. If I can get him in the box he will be slower moving and then can attach the end of the box. I am also hoping to get help in saving this animal .
