Hi Debra:
There could be two possibilities why this swan found your pond and was in the behavior it is currently displaying.
1. The swan could have been chased by older swans from its habitat due to the upcoming mating season.
2. The swan could have been on the migratory path and blown off course due to the severe weather that has been crossing the northeast. In this case, the swan may have become disoriented, has had no food or water for several days and just happened to find your pond. The best thing that you can do for him is to ensure that he has water and it does not freeze and provide him with food, cracked corn, poultry layer pellets and lettuce. The swan probably needs a couple days of rest, water and food to get itself together. Once this occurs, the swan may leave and go to wherever it might have been headed before it was blown off course.
