Ask the Swan Specialist

I was just watching water birds being feed at our overcrowded lake about one acre in size. A male and female Swan were being fed bread when a water fowl struck and took their only Signet and then ran off into the reeds. I could not believe what I just saw. The Swans are Australian Black Swans. Is this normal?
