In Response To: Re: Black and white swans in the same pond? (The Regal Swan)

Hi Paul

Yes, these species will do well, however, around mating season, they both may get testy. The Black Swans are usually a little more defensive at that time, but we have also seen Black Swans with less defensive behavior. So, it is totally contingent upon individual attributes. In any case, you may need to separate the pairs, especially when cygnets are present by possibly marking off sections of the pond so that both families can have equal amounts of water, habitat and food.

Additionally, Black Swans will produce cygnets twice a year while the Mute Swans will only produce cygnets once a year. If you have a small pond, this means there are going to be a lot of cygnets and adults and you may eventually have to find a good home for some of the cygnets. The Regal Swan
