Ask the Swan Specialist
We have a mute swan living on our lake at the Gardens. We feed him year round and keep part of the lake open for him to swim using a fountain. We live in zone4-5 near Lake Michigan and lake will freeze solid otherwise.
We believe it is a male as it is quite large. Recently he has become very aggressive toward people walking in the gardens, running at them and chasing them away. However, there are 2 people who feed him who he does not chase. One he tries to keep at the lake by pushing her back toward the lake when she leaves. He is also very aggressive toward golf carts which we use to move mulch, etc around the garden.
Is this a 'hormone' thing since we are in mid March? Would it help calm him down if we got a mate? As a non-profit garden, we cannot have visitors endangered and want to keep our 'swan-e'. He was donated to us by a bride's father two years ago.
thank you for your help!
