You need a slow introduction to ensure that the cygnet will not be chased, nipped or otherwise stressed from not being allowed in the habitat by the older swan. The older swan may not readily accept the young swan and could seriously injured and/or kill the young bird. The introduction should be made by erecting a pen (enclosed top to bottom so predators cannot dig under or climb into the pen to access the young swan, 1/2 in water and 1/2 on land with zero entrance so that there is no steep or abrasive surface to injure its legs or feet). The pen should be at least 12 x 8 in size with a feeder placed inside the pen. The outer perimeter of the pen should have poultry fencing from the bottom of the pen up to 4 feet. This will prevent predators from reaching into the pen and grabbing the young bird. The young swan should be placed in the pen for approximately 1-2 weeks to allow a proper and safe introduction. The pen allows the two swans to get to know each other, allows the young bird to acclimate to its new habitat, the feeding system and it new swan keeper. It also allows you to observe for any sign of aggressiveness by the older swan. If there is no sign of aggressiveness by the older swan, then you can release the young bird onto the pond. Always have a rescue device such as net, kayak or boat for a rescue in the event a rescue is needed because aggressive behavior is observed after the cygnet's release.
