In Response To: Re: Insured swan beak opens only a little bit (The Regal Swan)

Hi Sue:

If at all possible, she needs to be captured and taken to a veterinarian for treatment if at all possible. Can she fly? If so, this is going to be a difficult capture. If she cannot fly, the use of kayaks to herd her into an area for capture should be considered.

If she is able to eat and drink, then she may be able to sustain herself. If the beak gets to the point that she cannot feed or drink, this is going to be a deadly sentence as she will die from dehydration and/or starvation.

The best food is cracked corn mixed with poultry layer pellets. The cracked corn provides much needed Vitamin A, but will act as a filler. The poultry layer pellets provide micronutrients and minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, etc., necessary for growth and especially healing. Also, provide her with bread and lettuce. Lettuce will help sustain her aquatic/dry land grazing for vegetation which she may not be able to grasp and pull with her beak. Again, veterinary care is of the utmost concern at this point.
