Hi Evarest:

Both Black-necked swans and Coscorobas are fragile. They need warm climates, wet weather to do well in nesting and they must be protected against larger aggressive swans such as Black Swans.

Typically, both species are not the most astute when it comes to avoiding and escaping from predators nor from staying in a particular area. They will walk across and stand in the middle of the road without trying to move. As far as the noise, they are not the noisiest of swan species, but this really is the least of your worries. You will need to ensure that predators cannot get into their habitat and that they cannot leave their designated area. Finally, you will also need to insure that their ability to enter and exit the water is not hampered by steep high banks because they are so small and will not be able to climb as readily as some of the larger swan species.

The legs of the Black-Necked swans sit further back on their bodies which also makes their exiting the water difficult. This is why they stay mostly in the water. However, we have experience with the Black-Necks and depending on the individual swans, they may try to exit the water and nest on land instead of floating or reed nesting boxes. Again, a zero entry is the answer. The Regal Swan
