Hi Pat:
No, the swans need to be taught how to use the feeder. You need to get the swans to come over to the feeder. As soon as you have their attention, open the feeder door, and scoop some food into the water below the door. Scoop some more food and leave it at the door's edge so that the door won't close all the way and the swans see the food in the feeder. Eventually, they will put two and two together and associate the feeder with the food.
Also, DO not use the duck growth food. It may contain too much protein which can affect the swans wings cuasing angel wing, also known as backwards or slipped wing.
Give them a 1/2 mixture of poultry layer pellets and cracked corn. The corn acts as a filler but also provides Vitamin A. The layer pellets provide calcium, magnesium and other vitamins and micro nutrients. The Regal Swan
