Hi Glenn:

First, we need to know if he is really a cygnet. If he is under 6-8 months of age, then you might want to call the RSPCA because he may have become lost from his parents. If this the case, the young bird may not survive if he does not or cannot defend himself from predators such as fox or mink.

If he is older than 6-8 months, and large enough to protect himself, then he might be okay to stay in your area as long as there are no domesticated predators such as dogs, cats or humans that could harm him. If this is a safe habitat and an older bird, then you might try to offer him some cracked corn, poultry layer pellets and lettuce to supplement his diet. Bread can be offered as a treat, but too much can alter his blood chemistry and he does not need to think that this is his only food source. Bread is a treat and doesn't offer any nutritional value for the bird. Lettuce is a much better resource. We hope this information is of benefit. Let us know if the swan stays in your area.
