swan attack

I live in a complex with a big lake, and every summer they put 2 swans in there, I guess because of their beauty and to keep the geese at a minimum. This year, one of the swans is a male and when you walk around the lake he follows your every step. Yesterday I was walking with my daughter and niece, and we stopped to sit down on some big stones (far away from the lake), I was looking at the girls playing and all of the sudden they started screaming and when I turned around, the swan was charging at us with his wings spread open. Thank God this man saw this happening and chased him away with a stick. I guess this happend to other people in the complex and the association says they changed the old swan for a new one. But again, when I walk around the lake this "new" swan follows every step you make just like the other one did. If you stop, he stops, when you walk he swims along the shore at the same exact pace...just like the other one!! I was just wondering is this normal behavior for a swan? The other summers I have been here, I never noticed any of the swans follow you like these two. I have a feeling they never changed the swan! If we provoked the swan in any way, I would understand why he attacked, but we were just sitting on some rocks FAR AWAY from the lake. Any advice is appreciated.
