Ask the Swan Specialist

In Response To: Black swan needs mate (Tom Kowalski)

An Australian black swan appeared on our small lake in March and is not leaving. We cannot find the owner.

She has a band on the left leg, is that a female?

She has started following me and doing displays with flapping wings right near me, not just on the water. She tries to take off but her big wings just flap on the water. Is she pinioned? If so, how did she get here (Georgia), the band says TEXAS,

I think this swan needs a mate, and not a human one. Not me.

She is still quite wary. Hard to know what she is thinking.

QUESTION #1: If I get a male swan for her, will she accept him or will there be territorial fighting?

QUESTION #2: We are north of Atlanta and at times the lake will freeze in winter. What type of winter shelter is appropriate?

QUESTION #3: Is there a reputable place where can I obtain a single black swan? Most offered are mated paris and are quite expensive.
