Ask the Swan Specialist

In Response To: Three month old cygnet shunned by swan family (Pat)

I live on a quarry. We have two adult swans who have babies every June. Usually only 2 or 3 cygnets live and they always leave before winter. This june they had nine cygnets. They are almost as big as the parents now. Just yesterday I noticed one cygnet was not allowed to swim with the rest of the family, and I saw the mom swan go after the young cygnet and push it away. Today same situation. The mom dad and other eight cygnets are all swimming together and the other one is just sitting on the grass alone. I want to know why this would happen? Also what can I do? Should I contact wildlife control to see if they can rescue it? Can you please give me some insight? It's very sad to watch.
Thank you.
