Hi Suzy, hi Swan Specialist,
In clear memory, while it happened twenty years ago.
I was driving 75 mph at the 'Afsluitdijk' (Enlosing dyke about 19 miles in length in the North of The Netherlands), when two swans were flying at about 50 feet next to me, over the water parallel with the dyke and the road.
They were flying at the same speed as my car for over 10 minutes... I kept on checking my speed and watching the birds.
Perhaps or even probably some trim of wind in the same direction could have caused their amazing speed.
Still recall the slow and majestic beats of their mighty wings as they flew beside my car. These magic minutes I will never forget.
So, how fast swan can fly? I would say: in favorable circumstances 75 miles per hour.
Ernst from Holland
