Ask the Swan Specialist

In Response To: Winter care for mute swans (Karen)

We have 2 mute swans that are living in our 5 acre man made lake. They originally showed up in Spring 2015, left for the summer and returned Sept 2015. They are still here and we have had very cold nights this week with the lake freezing over. It seems their instinct is to sleep in the middle of the lake at night. We live in central Virginia and are concerned that they should have migrated. Thought they froze in the lake last night but did become active when the sun came out. Should we build them some sort of shelter on the lake or will they be ok?
Thank you for any guidance.
Sincerely,
Karen
