Hi Carol:

You do not want to use the swan hook. If you are not experienced in the use of the hook, the swan can be severely injured. There have been cases in which an experienced swan keeper used the hook and the hook has broken. Then, the swan swims off wearing part of the hook and needs an immediate alternate rescue attempt to save it.

The best way is to have an outdoor pen on the lake near the bank. Use a boat or kayak and herd the swans into the pen and have someone nearby to close the pen once the birds are contained. Then, someone will need to enter the pen and hand catch the swans.

If you do not have a pen, then look for a corner of a building or bushes that you can safely run the swans so that a capture can be undertaken. Just ensure that the swans cannot get their necks or feet caught in any meshing or other obstacle or cannot run into rocks or other hard surfaces. You also must ensure that the birds cannot drop off a steep bank or other area. We hope this helps. The Regal Swan
