Hi Gary:

Have the vet check for lead poisoning or other poisoning such as insecticides, fertilizers. etc. When a swan or any other bird stops eating and pooping, this is an immediate warning sign that something is wrong. The veterinarian might check the blood chemistries to see if there is an infection or other problem. Parasites, bacterial, fungal and viral infections and even injuries can cause the birds to stop eating.

If the swan is not eating, the veterinarian may start to tube feed the swan and offer supportive care such as chelation (in the event of poisoning), antibiotics in the event of infection and an I.V. to ensure no dehydration. The tube feeding and i.v. should not be done for an extended period of time as the swan may not start eating on its own due to stress. So, two days of tube feeding (twice a day and then regular water and food offered so it can eat on its own) should at least provide the swan with needed nutrients so that its energy does not take another downward turn to the point of no return. Please let us know how this situation progresses. The Regal Swan
