We would suggest a wing tag as a temporary solution. Leg banding can constrict a growing leg and the cygnet can also become ensnared on something from the band being too big. Neck bands can also constrict and become ensnared.

We would suggest a wing tag temporarily as it still is not the best solution for identifying swans as they can be easily removed if someone wants to steal your swan.

Our preferred method is micro-chipping. We use the Destron Fearing micro-chip in that serves two purposes. First, it is not removable so if someone steals your swan, the micro-chip serves as a permanent identification. Dr. Wade G. Gardner (dad to Dr. Geoffrey R. Gardner, one of our two veterinarians for The Regal Swan) helped pass a law in the state of Florida that if a swan is micro-chipped, permanently identified, then it is a felony to steal, harm, injure or kill a micro-chipped swan. So, the ability to prosecute someone stealing, killing or harming your swan is another asset for micro-chipping.

Secondly, this particular micro-chip also serves another purpose. The micro-chip has the ability to read body temperature, so as the veterinarian scans for identification, he/she can also scan for body temperature of the swan and get an idea if there might be a problem with the swan's health.
