In Response To: Re: Swan in pond arrived today: Where did it come from? (The Regal Swan)

Hi Angi:

There could be a couple of reasons for the swan’s appearance on your pond. If the weather has been extremely severe, birds can get caught in strong winds and blown-off course from the migratory flight path leading to their spring/summer nesting sites. If the weather improves, the swan will probably get its bearings and continue to wherever it was that it was traveling before the strong winds.

Another scenario could be that the young bird was chased by its parents due to the present nesting season. Young birds are chased by the parents from the habitat to find their own future mates and scout out habitats for their future family. This may the reason that the bird is in your pond. If there is sufficient food resources, other swans in the area so that it can find a mate, sufficient areas for preening, bathing, nesting and shelter from inclement weather and predators, the swan may stay or return once it has found a mate.
