Ask the Swan Specialist

In Response To: Re: New Swan owners and we need help! (The Regal Swan)

Hi Robyn:

Yes, Conrad did look a little confused on how he got into the gazebo. Just remember that once you pick him up, he may be very leery of you touching him again. The best thing to do is to stroke his neck or feathers if he lets you get close and continue doing this for a couple of days. Once he knows that you are not hurting him, he will become more accustomed to your handling and will not freak out everytime you are nearby. By the way, if you are not experienced in sexing, you could hurt the bird which is why we suggest an experienced avian veterinarian. You have to probe and squeeze and you could damage internal tissue if you do not know what you are doing.

Is there a university in your area with a veterinary medical program? If so, they might be able to help you and provide a learning experience for their students as well. Just a thought. The Regal Swan
