Hi Douglas:
Actually, if she is not leaning to one side and is moving the leg in the water, that is a really good sign. She may need several more weeks of recuperative/rehabilitative care to stay off the leg until she rehabilitates it in the water. The cipro should have removed the infection, but a follow-up blood test should be requested. Any residual infection should be dealt with possibly another antibiotic.
The normal WBC for swans is (3.8-23.8). The average for black swans is (9.4). This WBC is for (x10 to the 3rd power/mm to the 3rd power). Provide this info to the veterinarian and she/he will know what this means. This reference range was provided by Antech Diagnostic Labs during our research into blood chemistries for swans.
Normal Hematocrit for a Black swan averages 38 with a reference range for all swans at 29-49.
Normal cloacal temperature range of a swan should be between 102-106 degrees F. We hope this information is beneficial and she continues to progress. Please let us know. The Regal Swan
