Ask the Swan Specialist

In Response To: Swan with foot problem/Family Abandoned (Lynette)

Hello.
We have watched a family of mute swans grow up all Summer. Now the family has kicked one of the kids out of the family. We're still trying to decide if it's male or female. It has something wrong with it's foot. It can still walk on it but not very well. I think it may have been this way since birth. We have been trying to decide on whether to catch it and take it to rehab or just let nature do its thing. Will it go South by itself and make it okay? Is it possible that it will never mate because of its condition? This would be our second capture as a few years ago, a swan was hit by a boat and lost half of its wing. We knew we had to step in on that one because it could not fly and would have never made it through the Winter. Happy to say it is now living at a zoo. We just can't decide what to do about this one as the lake is starting to freeze over and our time is limited. Thank You for any advice you can give.
