Hi Debbie:
Usually, gender cannot be determined just by looking at a swan as size of the knob on the bill and general size of the swan may be deceiving. The best way to determine sex is either by probing or DNA sequencing. Probing, which if conducted when the swan is very young and genitals not fully developed, is ineffective. The most reliable test is DNA sequencing. A blood or feather sample is submitted to a reliable laboratory and genetic testing can verify if the swan is male or female.
It sounds as if the swan is very comfortable around you and feels safe. Enjoy! The Regal Swan
