We're not sure we can classify this as normal or abnormal behavior as each swan is an individual and has individual attributes. Some males may stay around to watch the mother and cygnets, some may go to another female/nest and some may stay within the area and infrequently drop by to see that everything is okay. If he returned after a day, then it probably means he is somewhere in the area. If he stays gone for more than 2 weeks, he either has left for good for some unknown reason, or may have unfortunately met his demise due to some sort of predation or accident.
