As far as we know, the male is the father of the female, and it is he who used to chase after her. It appears he is not doing that anymore. Since there are no other swans in the area, it doesn't appear likely that he is looking for another mate. I think it's more likely, as you say, that he may be going into the woods to die. We will look into getting a vet out here. Thanks again,
