Ask the Swan Specialist

In Response To: Re: Female Swan has been replaced (Jennifer)

Hi, Thank you for your reply,

Mum swan was ringed several years ago, Dad has such a large cob couldn't mistake him, the new swan has a smaller cob like mum, she isn't ill or injured thank goodness , tried to see if there were eggs in the nest, but can't, I assume not as she's back a forth, or she's not ready to sit, seems odd as she was missing for a good few weeks, she nested were she does every year in a wooded swamp area. They came, all three and feed together at first, then the new female saw her off , the dad carried on feeding, this has happened three times, the second time I kept the new swan away as I no what they can do to each other, the third time mum was trapped so flew off down river, Mum and Dad came together twice yesterday, today mum is on her own, later on dad came on his own no sign of the new one, seems all so disjointed this year? .

A couple of years ago they had a run in with a fox, I think, he won, a bit battered, saved all the cygnets though, no problems from then on, til now with this odd behaviour, in the photo Dad and the new swan together fluffed up, mum at the back .
