Hi Katrina:

This is a hard case to determine exactly what might occur. She could keep flying, but since she knows the area and where her free food is located, she probably will return. You might want to check the area lakes and especially the gated pond to see if she returned. It may also be hard to catch her if she knows that you are trying to render a capture. Animals and birds are not stupid. If she saw you capture the male, she may not want to get too close to you. You will only have one chance to capture her. You might want to forget about capturing her until she gets close and becomes more trusting once again. Give her some time, you will eventually get the opportunity to capture her. If she returns to the food and the mate, there is really no rush. A couple of days to a week and you will be able to get her clipped. Swans needs to be clipped every 6 months. We recommend at least 3 times a year so that the flight feathers do not get a chance to grow back without you knowing it is too late. Also, only clip one side so that the swans are off balance. If you clip both sides, they can circumvent the clipping, learn how to balance and fly.

But, again, since she knows the area, has been there a year, has a mate, she should return. Please let us know how this situation works out. The Regal Swan
