Hi Patricia:

First, we need to know the gender of the present swans. Secondly, exactly how old are the yearlings? Thirdly, what species of swans do you have? Each of these questions is going to determine if the new swans are going to get along now, but most importantly in the future.

If you have males and you introduce other males, they may or may not get along. However, if you have the same gender swans and you introduce two swans of a different or mixed gender, again, they may or may not get along. Mixed gendered pairs are going to produce cygnets. Do you need a permit in your state for possessing non-native swans? If you do, then you may be considered a breeder and need a breeder's license under the ownership permit.

Breeding is going to open up a whole new can of worms as you will have cygnets that will cause the parents to become extremely territorial during mating season. Yes, all swans are territorial and may become rather defensive, but if they have cygnets, you can multiply this defensive behavior. This behavior will manifest itself in swans being chased, fights that can result in serious injury and even death if the fights get too violent. Finally, you are going to have to have the cygnets pinioned (rendered unable to fly) at 1-3 weeks of age which will result in having to capture the cygnets, temporarily remove them from their parents (TEMPORARILY means no more than 3 hours) or the parents may reject them, and then finding a veterinarian that has the experience to perform the procedure. The costs of adding cygnets to a habitat can significantly add to the costs of veterinary care. If you do not want cygnets, then you need to stay with same gendered swans.

The age of the cygnets (under 2 years of age) will help facilitate the addition of new swans. Swan species must also be considered as some swans such as Whooper Swans can be very social, but Mute or Black Swans not very social. This all comes down to the individual swans and their personality. We hope this information is of benefit. The Regal Swan
