I live on a lake in Northern NJ. A pair of wild swans which have been on the lake for years, had babies in May of this year (2015). Sadly the father swan died this past summer leaving the mother swan to raise the cygnets. Two of the cygnets have survived and are now adolescents and flying. The 2 cygnets always stay side by side and just in the past 2 days, one has disappeared. The parents do not migrate in the winter and instead stay on the portion of the lake that does not freeze.

Could one of the cygnets have flown off to find another lake?

Do the cygnets generally fly off together?

Are they old enough to fly off on their own or is 7 months old too young?

Would a parent swan ever choose a cygnet as a new mate?
