Ask the Swan Specialist

In Response To: Cold new england, frozen pond (Georgina)

Hi,

I live in massachusetts on a pond near the ocean and we are experiencing a very cold winter, blustery wind, snow, cold rain and a recent blizzard with temps dropping into the teens this week.

There is a lone swan who has been staying for a few weeks now. The pond is frozen and he/she is sitting on the perimeter of the pond closest to my house. My family and I are feeding the swan cracked corn, multi grain bread and spinach (although not eating the spinach). The swan has flown off for a bit twice but always comes back at night and most days all day. Is it too cold for the swan? It amazes me every morning that the swan is still here and survived another bitter cold day and night without a break from the elements. Is this normal or is something wrong with the swan to not leave for warmer areas? I want to make sure the swan gets enough nourishment and rest but who can sleep when watching your back all the time not being able to be in the water. Thank you for any advice.
