Hi Jessica:

Have you always lived near the pond? Have you or anyone else been feeding or taking care of him? If so, he may be confused as to where the person lives and your house is the closest so he is looking for a handout.

Does he have a mate? If not, he may be bored and if he does not have a mate, may be looking for companionship with you.

There is nothing wrong with the behavior, as he may even begin to get closer to you so that you might be able to hand feed or pet him. However, we would suggest that you take his food back down to the lake as he needs water to feed without choking. This will also make him know that he needs to stay in his house, not yours for a treat. This is important because domestic and wild predators could kill him if he is in transit from the lake to your house. He needs to stay near the water so that he can escape any threat.

Also, if you get him so close to humans, he may wander up to anyone, even those who might want to harm or kill him. He can get too trusting for humans and even domestic dogs or cats which could be deadly if the wrong animal approaches him.

No, there is nothing wrong with his behavior, but he needs to be redirected back to his house. You can feed him a mixture of cracked corn and poultry layer pellet with some bread. By feeding him in the water, he will wait patiently for you at the water's edge.

You need to get into a routine so that you can feed him a couple times throughout the day at a certain time and he does not come looking for you. The Regal Swan
