Hi Martin:

We would get her to an avian veterinarian or swan rescue facility immediately. It sounds as if she lost at least 30% of her body weight sitting on the nest. This is normal, but she may have even lost more. She also could have an egg impaction, parasite or have lead poisoning. Without seeing her and having some initial blood tests or other work conducted, it is very hard to diagnose. She needs to be fed poultry layer pellets with cracked corn, lettuce and some bread. The boiled egg, muesli and wheetabix, may be edible but not providing her with essential nutrients.

This is why we suggest that you get her to a veterinarian. Her blood work will tell a lot as well as if she needs to be placed on an intravenous feeding regime to help her with nutrients and electrolytes. There is research that the lice found on swans can cause a form of heartworm, (not like dogs), but still can cause a debilitating condition. The pink feather syndrome is caused by a bacteria. Simply washing her with Fairy Liquid should help remove the bacteria as well as some of the lice. Please let us know how she fares. The Regal Swan
