Ask the Swan Specialist

In Response To: Black Swans (Maile)

Hi,
I work at a small lake in San Diego, CA and someone recently dropped off their pet Black Swan. It has been very friendly and it acknowledges all the staff and even swims to shore when we are around. My question is, is that it recently started acting weird. It does not acknowledge us anymore and it curls its neck up leaving it close to it's body. We are worried about our beautiful bird and some People have told us it could be nesting season and if its a she that she could be protecting her eggs in the reeds. We have gone as far as calling the San Diego Zoo for advice. As a city park we do not have the funds to take her to a vet. We've called Project Wildlife and many other animal sources for help but it seems we are stuck. I have done reserach on the internet to look up common illnesses in this type of bird but i seem to have no luck. Can you help me with smoe advice? I know she is not native to California could that be why?
