Ask the Swan Specialist

In Response To: Re: Black swans sleeping at night (Allen)

Thank you for the advice about the light.

Their barn has enough ventilation. It has a couple of sliding windows that we leave open at night when it gets hot. We originally built their barn such that a portion of the walls are built using a wire fence. Later when it started getting cold we covered the fenced area with plywood to protect them from cold. Now the entire 8x12 feet barn is enclosed. We have the option to remove the plywood during summer and leave only the fence. This will help keep the barn cool during summer. However, would this be a good idea or would they be afraid at night as they may see racoons walking around.

The floor of the barn is covered with fine shavings. I put a bail of straw on the side inside hoping they will make a nest but it may be too early since they do not seem to be interested.
