Latest Swan News at the Lagoon

May 3 - Results of Physicals: Boy, Small Bro and Big Bro

Ziggy just called me. Here are the latest news:

1- Boy was examined by Dr MacDonald; she found that he has a bad case of arthritis in his left leg. When he lands, he compensates with his right leg and has developed sores on the right leg for that reason. When he is in the water though, there is no pressure on any of the legs and it is good this way. Ziggy is looking for volunteers to help her give Glucosemine to Boy on a regular basis (a couple of times a week is OK; ideally, every day).

2- Dr MacDonald has completed the physical examination of the Big Brother: He is fine. He is still at the shelter.

3- Dr MacDonald is supposed to bring the Small Brother from her hospital to the shelter on Friday May 5; he is still wobbling a bit but he eats on his own and looks otherwise OK. As he prefers lettuce to other food, he is not gaining much weight. Dr. M would like him to gain a couple of pounds before being released at the Lagoon; he has to get a bit stronger. Depending on how he is on Friday, Ziggy might release him at the Lagoon or might wait a few more days.

4- Ziggy won't release Boy and the Big Brother at the Lagoon before the Small Brother has spent a couple of days at the Lagoon and seems to be doing well (Boy and the Big Brother have been at her shelter since Isolde was released on April 28.)

5- Ziggy is happy to see that Tristan and Isolde are now together. This is an excellent news. Papa swan chases them occasionally. There will be more chasing when Boy and the Big Brother come back next week... The chasing will decrease with the end of the nesting season at the end of June.
