Ask the Swan Specialist
Date: 24 March 2014
Hi Pamela:
This is the time of the year that the swans mate and the cygnets from the previous year are politely (not really-butt feather pulling, chasing, nipping) told by the parents to get lost and find another area. If it is a male, the male parent can seriously hurt and even kill the cygnet if it fails to leave. If the habitat is large enough, several acres, then the cygnet may be able to stay in the area as long as it does not intrude on the territory of the new cygnets. Yes, the cygnet will fly away and eventually find another flock of juveniles that have also been chased from their parents. The juveniles will pick a mate and then go about the business of establishing their own family and territory. The Regal Swan
