Hello, again, Regal Swan. I just want to update the situation that is an outgoing confusion of me and our lake's community who still watching the swan I have described to you before. As I 've mentioned previously, I believe it's the same female who were residing at our lake for over 10 years and after last winter when she returned, her partner disappeared. Apparently, something bad happened to him and he is no longer exist. However, I have described to you that the remaining returning swan has started nesting on the same isolated and tiny forested island in the mid of the lake but from a good distance to be watched by people. Obviously, her nesting instinct makes her to believe she sits on the eggs. And obviously, there are nothing is in there. The bottom line is here is that we are so worried about the lenght that she sits on the empty nest: it's over 3 weeks already. She rises her head up when we call her ( as usual she always comes to get her fresh bread), but then shortly after she is like almost ignoring our invite for food and gets back to sleep,I guess. I do not understand what she eats and how she survives for over 3 weeks by never leaving her nest. She constantly gets up on her feet, turns and turns side to side, and sometimes gets something off the nest and takes it out to water, bathes for a few seconds and repeats the same procedure of getting back to the nest, picking up something in her beak and carrying it out back to water. However, she only does that behavior once every week, if not less. The other time she lies down on the nest for days and the only movement she makes,is this stand up position of turning side to side on her feet like almost finding comfortable degree to lie back down on it again. In short: I have just read of your threads about another case with the loss of a partner where the female still sits on the nest. What I have noticed is that you suggested that such sitting on the empty nest only lasts for one or two weeks. But!!! our swan already sits on it for almost a month??? What do you thing goes wrong with her and why she still does it without figuring out there is nothing to sit on? Thanks for your time and help to understand these beautiful and intelligent birds and their behaivor.
