Hi Karen:

We need to know the answer for the following question:

Are the swans wild or captive?

If the swans are wild, then you need to have The Cove build up areas for nesting as the swans are going to go wherever they are comfortable nesting. So, you may build up an area and they may go back to the same area from this year or last.

The ideal situation would be to build up the area that they nested for the last two years. Hopefully, they will return and will continue to stay in the area. They must feel safe from predators and have good food resources in the area they nested, otherwise, they would not nest in that area.

Wild swans mean that that other than building up the above mentioned areas, there is not much you can do.

If the swans are captive, then you can build a pen (enclosed top to bottom 1/2 in water, 1/2 on land zero entrance so not steep banks, feeder inside, covered on outside perimeter from bottom rail up to 4 feet with poultry fencing-so cygnets cannot get out of the pen). By building a pen, you can force the birds to nest in a particular spot. Again, much easier to deal with captive swans than wild swans. The Regal Swan
