Swan Injury

Our older LARGE male swan's mate has died. We ordered and were delivered another female. We thought she had "flown the coop" however, she is now back and swimming on the pond. The resident male, however, appears to be wounded. His neck is bloody and his feathers are ruffled. He is able to swim and will swim on the pond to avoid human contact. We live in a remote area with raccoons and possibly ferrets/minks sometimes seen at night. Is it possible that the new swan we have is a male and not a female and that she/he has injured the older male resident swan--or is it more likely a predator who is harming our big swan?
