Unfortunately, there are many reasons a swan could leave and most are not good. A predator could have chased him or attacked him. He could have been ill and met his demise. He could have gotten in a fight with another swan and chased from the area and he may have gotten lost and can't find his way back. So, there is no actual way of knowing what happened. There is also the chance that this is a young pair and the male does not understand he is to protect the female. If this is the case, or nothing serious happened to him, then give it a few days to see if he returns.

There is also the possibility that your state wildlife officials are killing the Mute Swans to open the area for the larger Trumpeter Swans for Trophy Waterfowl hunting purposes. This reprehensible wildlife management plan is occurring throughout the U.S. as a means to maintain wildlife budgets and staff, not for conservation purposes.
